HANUKKAH JELLY DONUTS

As a family with close ties to the Jewish faith, it’s important to me that my boys learn about the Holiday traditions that are meaningful to our Jewish family and friends. A favorite this year has, of course, been “sufganiyot” or jelly donuts!

Foods cooked in oil (like latkes) are served to symbolize the miracle of Hanukkah, when a small amount of oil (believed to be olive oil) miraculously kept the menorah alight for eight days. These pastries were originally a savory dish filled with cheese, meat or mushrooms (also great choices). But of course the introduction of the jelly filling was revolutionary! And thus this tradition was born.

While your family can join you in the kitchen to prepare these treats from scratch, my Aunt Nina gave me the go-ahead for a good alternative: Dunkin’ Donuts Jelly-Filled Munchkins! My family enjoyed our sufganiyot as we watched our annual Holiday Parade!
